The dance’s deepest intention is to liberate the pelvis, free the belly and open the heart. This is a class for the experienced dancer who want to learn to use the vocabulary of belly dance as means of re-empowerment for trauma survivors. Traumatic experiences can leave behind powerfully mistrustful messages about the nature of life, that can eat away at our capacity to have faith and hope in the future. These messages can then crystallize into fear-based body patterns that inhibits our ability to fully breathe into and occupy own own strong selves. In this class, we will learn to use belly dance to introduce a new and affirmative set of experiences and beliefs into closed and rigidly held body systems. We will come to understand how to teach and process through the powerful and direct information that is inherent in belly dance. We will explore the strength and stability of the hip circle, and it’s capacity to bring us fully back into the birthright of living rooted in our pelvic floor. We’ll use the crescent moon movement to rock and hold us, and though that movement learn to integrate the oldest and most soothing of mother messages, that we are loved and lovable just for our own selves. Through shimmies will come to understand that pushing and over extending ourselves is not the way to strength , but rather that the surest path to power is relaxing into the flow and momentum of an experience. And as we immerse ourselves in undulation, we will re-connect to the reliability of ongoing rhythm of life, and learn to trust that no matter how far out to sea life's challenges toss us, there is always a life current pulling us safely back to shore. Belly As Healing Dance II Adv. Class explores refinement and strengthening of technique, self expression, layering & rhythms. We work on understanding the dance; its deeper meanings and potential for greater transformation in our lives. |
